Eric D. Colburn, PLS, President of Foster Survey Company, licensed Class II Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) Onsite Wastewater Treatment System (OWTS) designer, and certified Bottomless Sand Filter designer attended and completed the Automated Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Sizing and Pump Support Material Course in Kingston, RI, held today, December 17, 2015, at the University of Rhode Island (URI) New England Onsite Wastewater Training Program (NEOWTP).

12 hours of OWTS specific Continuing Education Credits (CEU’s) every 3-years is required for RIDEM Class II Designers license renewal. For the current renewal term of 2013-2015, the 4-hour Automated Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Sizing and Pump Support Material course accounted for 2 CEU’s towards Eric’s 12-hour total required CEU’s. He obtained before a total of 10-hours CEU’s by attending the Designing Nitrogen Removal Technologies course, the Connecticut Soil Day and receiving training for Orenco Systems, Inc. Advantex Treatment Systems and ROTH MultiTank (RMT) Series Installation.

BSF AutoCalcsAutomated Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Sizing and Pump Support Material Course

The Automated Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Sizing and Pump Support Material course addressed the necessary calculations to design a RIDEM approved Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Alternative and Experimental Technologies (A/E) OWTS, or septic system, which provide equal or better protection to the environmental and public health. A BSF treatment system includes advanced pre-treatment, pumps, and the final “polishing” sand filter component.

Eric D. Colburn, PLS, President of Foster Survey Company said “Bottomless Sand Filters are a great design choice for small lots, lots with steep grades or higher watertables, or where the septic system leach field must be located higher in elevation than the house. Due to the pump calculations and regulatory requirements to design a BSF, it’s important to properly and accurately calculate the system pre-treatment components, pump sizing and controls, and Bottomless Sand Filter size and configuration.”

Automated Bottomless Sand Filter (BSF) Sizing and Pump Support Material Course Description:

This class is especially focused on BSF designs for Category 1 and 2 systems. We’ll demonstrate how to operate new spreadsheet programs to automatically run calculations that determine system design requirements. The programs will help you to size a BSF with proper orifice and lateral spacing, and will determine the elevations for all floats and screen vaults, and the required timer run times. Another spreadsheet helps you with tank and pump chamber buoyancy calculations. Instructor: David Kalen (NEOWTP).
